State of art bioenergy R&D laboratory opening at CREST in Enniskillen

A new state of the art bioenergy research and development and testing facility opens at CREST in Enniskillen on Wednesday 9th September 2015. To celebrate this opening, a 3-day programme of free bioenergy events will take place from 8th to 10th September.

The impressive new R&D facility comprises a testing laboratory and a biomass processing area which include a briquette press, pellet mill and oil seed press, and a range of laboratory testing equipment. It is thought to be the most extensive research facility of its type in Northern Ireland.

The laboratory was part-financed through the Interreg IVa programme with support from the Special EU Programmes Body. It forms part of extensive R&D facilities at CREST that have been established at South West College’s Technology and Skills Centre in Enniskillen.

Tim Stokes, CREST Centre Manager said, “The new laboratory is an excellent addition to the CREST R&D facilities which include the CREST Passive Pavilion and innovative solar and energy storage installations”. He added, “It will enable us to undertake a range of practical industry research projects relating to bioenergy on behalf of businesses and farmers in the region”.

The equipment can be used to process and analyse various biomass residues to assess their suitability for producing biomass fuel. It can also be used to support local Anaerobic Digestion plants through testing the stability of biological processes that are producing the biogas – thereby facilitating efficient plant operation and energy production.

The 3-day series of events which have been organised by CREST at South West College and the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) will run as follows:

8th September – Biomass Fuel Quality Workshop at AFBI, Hillsborough

9th September – CREST R&D Lab Opening & Biomass Processing & Testing Workshop

10th September – Anaerobic Digestion & Biogas Optimisation Seminar at CREST

CREST is one of South West College’s innovation centres. CREST has world class facilities and a team of staff through which it provides support to small and medium-sized businesses in Northern Ireland and beyond, enabling them to develop and adopt new renewable energy and sustainable technologies.

Anyone interested in attending should contact Shane McBrien on 028 6634 2301 or shane.mcbrien@swc.ac.uk for CREST events and Chris Johnston on 028 9268 1540 or Chris.Johnston@afbini.gov.uk for the AFBI event.
